Our Psychologist

What is ADHD?
ADHD is a disorder of the nervous system that impairs a person’s ability to focus, pay attention, control impulses, and regulate emotions.
What is the process of assessment?
The assessment process for ADHD involves careful evaluation of symptoms, interviews with parents, and clinical assessments with the child. The results are analysed and it is determined whether the child meets criteria for diagnosis of ADHD. Psychologists with appropriate experience and training can diagnose ADHD but only paediatricians and psychiatrists can prescribe medication for ADHD.
Some common features of ADHD
- Difficulties with focus and attention
- Easily distracted
- Energetic, can’t sit still
- Struggles with impulse inhibition
- Difficulties with emotional regulation
- Disorganised, often losing things
- Difficulties with time management
ADHD can present differently in different people. Some people present with mainly inattentive symptoms, others present with mainly hyperactive symptoms and others present with both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms.
